Yuzuru Hanyu, who received the gold medal for men's figure skating at the Sochi Olympics in February, is working towards the new season.
Last season, including the Olympics, Hanyu won the Grand Prix Final (Fukuoka) in December of last year and won the World Championships (Saitama) in March, achieving the triple crown. On June 27, after he performed for the first time his short program for this season at Dreams on Ice, he made a comment.
"I think, probably, I was burned out after the season ended. But, because there was an ice show only three days after the Worlds, (including other events) and I had other work as well, I did not realize that I was burned out.
At ice shows, everyone in the audience would welcome me as the Olympic champion..... After experiencing this, motivation to 'work hard' started to boil. For the first time, I felt I was able to show my true self."
Being with other top skaters such as Evgeni Plushenko (Russia) at shows was one reason why he was able to return to his true self. Hanyu, who stated "I want to focus on skating and put my all into it", has chosen Chopin's "Ballad No. 1" for this season's short program.
